Took a call on the 10/3/12 regarding a motorcycle electrical fault find on a Yamaha FJR 1300 on the reason why it would not turn over. I made arrangements to visit the Home address on 11/3/2012 to look at the Motorcycle in question, after initially checking all earth points for faults and checking ground condition, I also checked Immobiliser wiring which had been previously trapped, so cut and resoldered all wires as a process of illumination for any starter faults, then moved onto the starter solenoid and all wiring, which was good.
Now down to the starter, I checked for continuity for the earth, also checked for a live to the starter when button pressed, which was ok, so this illuminated the immobiliser, also checked to see if the starter would turn over the old fashion way (this didnt happen), please dont try this as it may cause injury, so at looking at the terminal I could see sparks when moving the terminal which suggested their was an internal fault with the starter.
After removing the starter and stripping down for further investigation, the live terminal was hanging on by a thread, but one of the wire windings was trapped between the windings and the magnets and was broken.. So after a couple of hours the fault was the starter itself. So I charged the customer a very happy price in which he was very happy with, he spent two weeks looking for the fault a got no further forward, had he took it to a shop they would have charged £100+ for this job, my price was less than half the price of that, with a tip to go, which meant it was half the figure that a shop would have charged.
So if you have an electrical fault with your motorcycle or scooter or car and you dont want to pay garage prices, and would like to see the work, so you can see what going on, and feel your getting value for money then call Gas Motorcycles the motorcycle electrician, mechanic and MOT tester, for all your motorcycle needs, I am the man to trust.
